Young Poets Society
Creating a strong sense of community
Kavi Samuha, a young poets group of Koppal Town near Bengaluru was started two years ago by 37-year-old Siraj Bisaralli, an Electronics and Communication diploma holder passionate about poetry and literature. The group meets every other Sunday to discuss and read poetry on the lawns of the Inspection Bungalow of Koppal City. They have published books and even conduct competitions and discussions at colleges and schools. Well known poets like Dr Rahmat Tarikere, Harinath Babu, Peerbasha, Dr Jaji Devendrappa, and Siddu Yapalaravi have participated in the Kavi Samuha. Senior poets like Vitala Gorantli, Allama Prabhu Bettadur, VB Radder, Dr Mahanthesh Mallanagowdara are helping the young poets grow.
“Kavi Samuha has helped me identify and improve my style,” says young Sumathi Hiremath, grateful for the sense of community that the Samuha provides.
The idea is to create awareness about famous old generation poets of the state as well as other languages among youngsters. They read, discuss and assess poems written by them and others.
“Many big names in Kannada literature have evolved from small groups like these,” says noted poet and writer Prof Rahmat Tarikere. “Everyone doesn’t write good poetry but I welcome the trend as it helps youngsters grow. It is definitely a positive trend.”
